It’s Monday morning. The memo you just got from your CEO couldn’t be clearer: “We’re moving everything to public cloud.” In your inbox: “Finance needs a presentation, by tomorrow, that shows how much the CEO’s move will slash IT costs.” First meeting of the day: “Your CIO wants custom apps that connect and scour every data store your team has ever built. And she wants it done before she leaves for summer vacation.”
There’s no question that we’re living in the cloud era, and the shift to cloud is accelerating. It’s clear that enterprises need to approach business decisions differently. It’s time to think beyond the promise of cloud and address how to get to cloud most effectively: how to fuel innovation, do more with data, keep it all protected and bat back those Monday morning mandates.
Let’s address the three biggest cloud myths, countdown-style:
3. Moving everything to the cloud will surely save you money.
You need to consider your entire IT deployment in public, private and hybrid clouds and consider total cost output. Some workloads and processes are more easily shifted to public cloud than others. Sometimes leaving applications on premises is the right decision. And regulatory or business requirements may further complicate the financials.
IBM can help you identify what workloads you should move to the cloud, when, and on what delivery model, including third-party clouds. Our software solutions give you ways to manage your workloads, across all clouds, with a single control point.
2. Developing on the cloud will make you more agile.
Agility goes far beyond compute-on-demand, a primary benefit of the public cloud. Cloud-native apps can offer new ways to deliver value to your customers and help drive efficiency inside your company. You should be able to develop cloud-native apps on one cloud model and deploy them anywhere you need them. You shouldn’t have to move all workflows and data into the cloud to develop apps around them.
Develop in multicloud environments that work best for your developers, not your cloud vendor.
1. You should go all in on one cloud.
Drumroll please. This top cloud myth should be forever debunked in 2018. Despite what you might hear, there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to cloud. Your business is unique. You have specialized workloads, apps and data. We don’t think you can afford to be locked into a single cloud model or vendor approach.
IBM Cloud embraces the opposite. There’s no other business like yours. We believe that it is time for you to design your cloud for flexibility, agility and whatever’s coming next from your competitors. Our approach gives you the freedom to deploy on the right delivery model for your unique workloads, whether that’s on public, private or hybrid clouds.
