Through those conversations, I gained numerous insights into the evolving challenges in the IT operations management space. I also learned a lot about the successes IBM clients are achieving with IBM cognitive management capabilities.

The challenges around managing hybrid environments are not new, but they have evolved into managing multicloud environments with abundant infrastructure complexity and application diversity.

According to Gartner, by 2020

“90 percent of organizations will adopt hybrid infrastructure to become more agile and to transform. (In fact, the average enterprise is using or piloting six clouds.) Hybrid cloud is flexible and enables organizations to choose the set of options that work best for them (e.g. cloud native for certain client applications, private cloud for other apps and traditional for some systems of record).”

At Think 2018, I noted in particular that private clouds have percolated up, to become a major component of those multicloud strategies that enterprises are choosing to help transform their businesses.

How are you managing IT complexity?

The growing complexity of managed environments frequently runs parallel to the adoption of DevOps practices.

Some 90 percent of organizations report that they are implementing or planning to implement DevOps according to a recent Forrester survey. In fact, Forrester reports that the questions have shifted from “What is DevOps?” to “How do I implement at scale?”.

So IT Operations are not only challenged with doing more, but they are also challenged with the need to evolve to become much more agile.

At the same time, businesses must support more compelling user experiences, which in IT operations management terms generally translates to greater service availability. As a result, many enterprise leaders have concluded that using machine learning to provide actionable insights in these rapidly changing and complex environments is now essential.

Most enterprise leaders know it is essential because they know it has become impossible to maintain the deep domain knowledge it was once possible to keep.
