Saving frogs? Let’s hop to it.

Frogs help keep many ecosystems in balance, but their populations are declining. To protect this threatened group, scientists in Australia need fresh information about each species and their respective environments, but there are too many frogs to count on their own. IBM has partnered with the Australian Museum to create an app called FrogID, which allows everyday people to collect data about frogs across Australia. Users collect and record frog calls from their backyards and waterways, matching the sounds they’ve recorded—from croaks and chirps, to whistles and barks—to the app’s library of existing calls. This data gives scientists a fighting chance to save frogs and restore balance to their delicate ecosystems.
