Getting started with IBM Bluemix

Getting started with IBM Bluemix

Doug Tidwell demos how to start developing and deploying apps on IBM’s
cloud platform

About this video

In this video, I take you through the Bluemix interface and show you how to
build and deploy a web application. If you follow along, roughly 10
minutes from now you’ll have an application that your friends and
relations around the world can see. Behind that application will be a code
repository, a continuous delivery pipeline, and a cloud-based NoSQL
database. And you’ll build all of those things without writing a single
line of code.

Bluemix is IBM’s Cloud Platform as a Service and more. It lets you quickly
create, deploy, and manage your applications in the cloud. You don’t have
to deal with any of the underlying infrastructure. You don’t have to deal
with hosting and managing your cloud-based applications. And you can use
the tools and languages of your choice. Plus, Bluemix comes with an
extensive catalog of services from IBM and third parties that you can
use in your applications.

Bluemix lets you focus on writing great code, not on
installing and configuring infrastructure.

To get started, create a free trial
and you can do everything that I show in this demo. We’ll
go through three steps:

  1. Create and deploy a web application using the Node.js SDK
  2. Add a continuous delivery toolchain to the application
  3. Add a NoSQL database to the application

This video sets the stage for other videos (to be published soon on
developerWorks) that build more sophisticated
versions of the app:

  • A Cloud Foundry application that runs on Bluemix (and
locally on your machine, if you like)
  • A Docker container that runs in the IBM Container
  • A Node.js application that uses a microservice hosted on the
    IBM OpenWhisk serverless computing platform
