VMware Cloud Foundation on IBM Cloud: New Features & Sizes Now Available

With this month’s update to VMware Cloud Foundation on IBM Cloud we are continuing our rapid pace to enhance this hybrid cloud service based on VMware’s market-leading technology. This latest service update provides even more choice and control and exemplifies how IBM’s cloud service delivers an evergreen benefit of continuous software and hardware updates, in contrast to the typical widely-spaced apart, expensive and extensive on-premises upgrade efforts.
What is VMware Cloud Foundation?
I’m glad you asked! I hope by now you have already heard all the noise the IBM and VMware partnership has made, especially last August when VMware announced their new offering, Cloud Foundation, and coincidently IBM announced it was the first to bring Cloud Foundation to market as a cloud service. <add hyperlinks to announcements>
VMware Cloud Foundation on IBM Cloud <add hyperlink> brings together VMware vSphere, vSAN and NSX into a natively-integrated stack of virtual compute, virtual storage and virtual networking built upon IBM Bluemix bare metal servers – all dedicated just to you. This platform environment can be operated independently or as a seamless, hybrid extension of your on-premises data center. A unique aspect of Cloud Foundation are the VMware and IBM-provided lifecycle management capabilities to automate Day 2 operational tasks, and an integrated backup service for the management plane. Altogether, you get an enterprise-grade VMware platform that is rapid to deploy, as well as easier to update and maintain.
Now with even more choices
With this month’s update, released May 22nd, Cloud Foundation environments are deployed using Bluemix bare metal services based on the latest Intel Xeon v4 “Broadwell” processors. So, with no big upfront investment for new hardware, in addition to hours & hours of researching and testing compatibility, you can now get a fully-supported, VMware-validated hardware compliant environment, all on the latest Intel Xeon processors – and all with the click of button. That truly shows the evergreen proposition of cloud. Like all VMware solutions on IBM Cloud, the benefits include vSphere compatibility, workload portability, automated deployment and the agilities & economies of scale that Cloud consumption, for both hardware and VMware software, provide.
With the introduction of these new processors, we are pleased to announce that you have a choice to select the size of the servers that best fit your workload needs, at a lower starting price. Two sizes are now available:
- Small: Dual Intel Xeon E5-2650 v4, 24 Cores, 2.20 GHz, 128 GB RAM, 12 disks
- Standard: Dual Intel Xeon E5-2690 v4, 28 Cores, 2.60 GHz, 256GB RAM, 12 disks
Need more memory? We have a memory upgrade program that can help. Already deployed and using Cloud Foundation on the previous hardware? No worries. You can continue using and expanding your existing deployment for as long as you like, and move over to an instance based on the new servers when you are ready.
Finally, and even more exciting, these server options are available for deployment in more data centers. With the addition of these five data centers in Oslo, Norway; Seoul, Korea; Sydney (04), Australia; Hong Kong, China; and Singapore, you now have the choice to deploy your Cloud Foundation instance in any of 21 IBM Cloud data centers around the world. That’s a lot of choices.
